Thank you for the help.
That does explain some things. I had changed links colours etc and background colours. I can easily do those again, but needed to understand what was going on.
At present I have the original site activated. If I change it to the child version, there is a problem with the menu. All items are listed, even those I had not attached to the menu bar. Also on the original site, I have some menu items that are drop downs, and now they appear as an inline list.
I had assumed the site was meant to reference the style sheet from the original site, but one could just add extra bits of css?
